The Scoop – Middle of January Edition

It’s that time of the year.  It’s cold outside, black Friday and the holidays have come and gone and you’re taking care of kicking off 2014 projects.  In my role, I interact with customers on a daily basis and I was looking for a way to share information with them without the use of email.  It’s very easy for information to be lost in email simply due to the amount of it we receive on a daily basis.  Therefore I figured I would use my blog to create an extension of myself to my customers as well as the rest of the community.

The goal of the scoop is to share information that I have come across most recently.  This could include KB articles, blog posts, Q & A from customers (their identities will be removed) or anything else that I think could be valuable to the community, so let’s get started.

One customer asked me numerous design questions concerning the vCenter Server virtual appliance (vCSA) and single sign-on (SSO), especially in a multi-site configuration.  A couple things to keep in mind.  The vCSA only supports basic mode SSO, therefore if linked-mode is a requirement you’ll be forced to use the Windows installable vCenter Server.  Kendrick Coleman has a great article on vCenter Server and Single Sign-On design considerations.  My perspective has always been to keep it simple, therefore in my customer example I recommended using the vCSA with SSO.  Basically this created two silos, a vCenter Server and SSO in one datacenter and another instance of vCenter Server and SSO at the other datacenter, the most important part to me being that they are completely independent of each other (if one site fails, the other site will continue to run without issue [no dependencies]).
